Self Edge

Self-Edge countertops have a straight edge and normally have a backsplash that is provided as a separate piece. Most people use the trade name of Formica to describe these tops. Laminate tops are constructed by applying a high pressure plastic laminate to a particle board or plywood substrate. Most laminate tops fit into one of three categories. A laminate top can either be a flat deck which means that there is no backsplash covering the back wall. Another option is a low splash countertop. This is where the backsplash goes up for a few inches (generally four inches) leaving the rest of the wall exposed. The most popular and cleanest option is the full splash top. In this case the complete wall is covered by laminate between the counter deck to the bottom of the wall cabinets. Laminate in this case will even be extended to cover the wall behind the stove. Generally speaking laminate tops are inexpensive when compared to other types of tops. They resist stains fairly well. With self edge tops you have a large variety of colors and manufacutrers to choose from. Below are a few links.
